Job Description:
The Sr. Applied Research Manager is responsible for managing
applied research to identify, select and develop key technology and
unmet need solutions for the formal pipeline. This person will aim
to de-risk new product ideas and deliver proof of concepts for
review by sr. management prior to full development investment. The
Sr. Applied Research Manager will be responsible for managing their
team to ensure resources are allocated correctly and utilized
efficiently to best meet company objectives. This person will be
expected to continually develop their team through hands-on
leadership, coaching and mentoring.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establishes and controls processes and budget for Applied
Research group.
- Create systems and procedures that meet the necessary Applied
Research activities.
- Fully manage and align group with company needs and provide
guidance with minimal to no direct input.
- Develop, mentor and manage the Research department resources
and ensuring expertise is assigned to meet company goals and
objectives
- Undertake people management responsibilities to the direct
reports to this role, including but not restricted to, generating
training and development plans, carrying out performance appraisals
and dealing with performance related issues.
- Provide coaching and support to direct reports in their
day-to-day roles and act as a point of escalation where necessary
for specific issues that may arise.
- Ensure department activities align with company goals and
pipeline strategy.
- Oversee multiple, fast-paced investigations or developments of
new products, processes or technologies, with the goal to deliver
Proof of Concept or quick kill of the idea.
- Lead, drive and deliver expected results according to agreed
project scope, cost, quality and timeline milestones.
- Ensure appropriate tools and supports on hand to conduct
rigorous applied research and evaluation, including knowledge
management, academic and industry search, and appropriate survey
and statistical software for both quantitative and qualitative
analysis.
- Partner and coordinate with other departments within New World
Medical to ensure projects needs are properly met.
- Coordinate customer facing activities, such as conference demos
and wetlabs.
- Contribute to department strategic decision-making.
- Effectively communicate with all levels of Management.
- Travel to visit vendors, clinicians, and attend training for
project and people development.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong time and project management skills with attention to
detail, and the ability to plan and prioritize work and balance
multiple projects.
- Use Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and project
management tools effectively.
- Excellent knowledge of applicable regulations and standards,
both FDA and international.
- Strong scientific/technical writing ability.
- Developing and managing teams.
- Managing and implementing multiple projects in exemplary
fashion.
- Experience in a high-growth, fast paced organization.
- Capable of cross collaboration with other department and
providing strategic insight that indicates an enterprise wide
mindset.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in a Science or Engineering discipline. MS or
PhD preferred.
- 10+ years of professional experience, preferably with medical
devices, with at least 4+ years in Manager role.
- 5+ years of medical device new product development.
- Managed multiple projects/ initiatives successfully in
exemplary fashion.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of
the time.
- Occasionally move about inside the office and travel to and
from office buildings to access file cabinets, employee offices,
office machinery, etc. This may include, but is not limited to,
bending and walking.
- Must be able to operate a computer and other office
productivity machinery, such as a computer printer, computer
keyboard, calculator, etc.
- Ability to listen and speak with employees and vendors. Must be
able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- View and type on computer screens for long periods of
time.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time in clinical
settings.
